Welcome to Leather Crafting for Beginners
Leather working can be a very rewarding hobby, but like many such hobbies, it is often confusing to know where to begin. This is why we are here.
The pages on this site are intended to help you, the leather crafting novice, to understand and navigate the large, sometimes overwhelming, world of leather crafting and help you get started on what can be an educational and enlightening experience. Whether you are completely new to working with leather, or you just want to find answers to some questions you still have about your new hobby, “welcome” and let me say, you are in the right place.
So what will you find here?
Do you know what a skiver is? Can you tell the difference between Veg-Tanned leather and Chrome-tanned? Do you know why different tanning processes are important to identify?
Here at Leather Crafting for Beginners, it is our goal to introduce the art of leather crafting in simple terms that everyone can understand. In doing so, however, it is important to educate you – the novice leather crafter – about the various terms and phrases that are used within the craft so that you can get the best results in your projects. It is also important to educate yourself on different techniques and the reasons why they were used.
Here you will find articles on all manner of topics revolving around the art, trade, history and science of leather working. If you have questions and cannot find an answer here, please contact us and ask. We’d be happy to answer any question you may have. Or who knows, we might even write a new article specifically about your topic.
One of the biggest searches I have seen online regarding leather crafting are for patterns. In my own searches, i have discovered that there are lots of quality leather workers out there today that simply refuse to share their patterns. Now, often this is because those craftsmen make and sell leather goods for a living and sharing their personal patterns would be almost like giving away their products for free. However, we at Leather Crafting for Beginners feel that there need to be more simple patterns available to the leather crafting public – patterns that are easy to understand and easy to follow but still show you simple and universal techniques that you can use on your own designs while creating actual projects of your own. I mean, really, how many personalized key fobs do you really need?
Another area where there is a huge dearth is the availability of quality tooling patterns and designs. While it is true that any good line drawing or design can be used as a basis for leather tooling, not everyone is an artist. We aim to help solve this problem by offering many tooling designs in various styles for your download.
Tools and Other Supplies
We understand that not everyone has a full set of punches or sculpting tools. We also know that leather is hard to come by unless you know where to find it. As a service to the new leather crafter, we have partnered with several companies to bring you the best deals we could find on many of the tools and supplies that are mentioned here on the site. If you have your own source for leather or other supplies, wonderful! If not, we’re here to help.
